From Milligrams to Kilotonnes: What Industry Teaches a Scientist

In a university lab, a successful experiment might produce 50 milligrams of a new catalyst. In industry, the same idea is only interesting if it survives the journey to tonnes โ€” without losing performance, blowing the cost model, or failing at hour 10,000.

Having worked across academic research (IIT Bombay, the Weizmann Institute) and now industrial R&D at BPCL, I’ve come to see these not as two career paths but as two halves of one discipline. Here is what the industrial half teaches you that the academic half rarely does.

1. The plant is the ultimate peer reviewer

A referee can question your interpretation. A refinery stream doesn’t argue โ€” it simply behaves. Real feedstocks carry impurities your synthetic precursor never had; real processes run at temperatures your furnace held for hours, not months. Industry forces a brutal honesty about which results are robust and which were artifacts of a clean lab.

2. Analytical science is the nervous system of industry

In academia, characterization often serves the paper โ€” one good XRD pattern, one clean spectrum. In an industrial analytical role, characterization is the product: thousands of measurements whose consistency, traceability, and speed decide real operational choices. You develop a different relationship with your instruments โ€” less photography, more physiology.

3. Constraints are creative fuel

“Make it work with earth-abundant elements, at ambient pressure, within this budget” sounds limiting. In practice, constraints are where the most original chemistry happens. Some of the most elegant materials solutions of the last decade came from being denied the expensive answer.

The translational scientist

My conviction is that the next generation of energy technologies โ€” green hydrogen above all โ€” will come from people fluent in both languages: rigorous enough for the lab bench, pragmatic enough for the plant floor.
